Okay I thought I'd start out by answering that simplest of all questions...
What Is A Carry On?
The Carry On series is very cream of British comedy. They were, and still are, one of the longest running series of films in the history of cinema. From the very first Carry On (Sergeant) in 1958 through to now, the words "Carry On" instantly spring mental pictures of saucy, seaside postcard humour, and Barbara Windsor flinging off her bra in Carry On Camping.
There are very few people in Britain, and of course other countries, who haven't seen at least one of the thirty one Carry On films, not to mention the many Carry On stage shows, Christmas specials and the television series. The style of humour so vital to the Carry Ons is always done with such energy that when someone is asked to think of the typical British comedy, the words "Carry On" are the first out of the mouth. The jokes and situations are full of innuendo and saucy meaning.A good example from Carry On Abroad:
Yet they still have a certain innocence not achieved so successfully by anyone else. They key to them was the double entendre done to perfection and of course the dirty laughs and many “Phwoars” by the men. The focus on sex and crude language was never needed. They use seaside postcard humour.
The Carry Ons never get boring because there are so many to choose from. They are different themes, different characters and different plots linked of course with a team of regulars. The Carry Ons covered hospitals (Carry On Nurse, Doctor, Again Doctor and Matron), history (Carry On Cleo, Up the Khyber, Henry and Dick), Holidays (Carry On Cruising, Camping, Abroad and Behind, and the army (Carry On Sergeant and England), not to mention many more topics. So here is the list of films that was, and still is the crème de la crème of British humour.
